Jason Fawcett and his team at Elizabeth River Landscape Management appreciate community support, and gladly return the favor.

When a friend of Jason Fawcett’s began a charitable organization that encourages hope for families living with childhood cancer, he knew there was great opportunity for his Suffolk, Va.-based company, Elizabeth River Landscape Management to get involved. Since then his company has put in man hours and man power to help assist The Roc Solid Foundation.

Founded by Eric Newman, who survived liver cancer as a child, The Roc Solid Foundation puts together “Roc Solid Ready Bags,” which are given to parents who have recently learned their child has cancer and will be undergoing long series of treatments. The bag contains everything the family might need during an unexpected hospital stay, which often happens immediately after a diagnosis.

The organization also has a flagship program, “Play it Forward,” which constructs custom play sets for children battling cancer. Fawcett, who is the father of a three-year-old himself, says that he has been especially moved by the Play it Forward program. “I’ve seen how much my son loves his own playground and to be able to build one for a sick child whose family couldn’t afford it is very rewarding,” he says.

In November, Elizabeth River will host a golf tournament to raise funds for Roc Solid. “One hundred percent of what we raise will go to the organization,” Fawcett says. “We’re always looking for ways to give back and this is one that we’re proud of. It’s something incredibly special to be able to help a child in need.”

Fawcett admits that it can be hard for businesses to find the time and energy to commit to giving back, but he says that you just have to make the time. “I know it can be a challenge to get more involved,” he says. “We work hard during the week and we want to spend the weekends with our families. But we feel grateful for our community’s support in our company’s success. Giving back is our way of saying thanks. I believe strongly in giving back to one’s community however you can.”
