Weed Control Essentials sponsored by PBI Gordon

Goosegrass is a big part of weed control programs for LCOs around the country.

| April 21, 2014

Depending on climate and compaction pressure, goosegrass can be a big pain for lawn maintenance crews. Here’s what some of you are saying about it this season.

"It hasn’t been on my radar so much yet, so as of right now it hasn’t been a big worry for me."
-Keith Kolb, owner of Green Side Up in Alma, Mich.

"Well we’ve been seeing it become more and more prevalent. And because it’s not detected right away; we’re seeing a lot more issues with that as well. Actually, we saw that towards the end of last year so we’re probably looking at more issues than we have in the past. A lot of it is working towards the pre-emergents. So far you can see some remnants but it’s hard to tell whether we’re looking at goosegrass or did we get some crabgrass? Now that it’s starting to green up we can start to see the difference between that and the fescues which are out there."
-Dave Trotter, owner of Trotter Landscaping in Morris, Ill.

"I can tell you that our Poa annua this year is a lot worse this year because of the freezing and the temperature change, and it’s breaking down our pre-emergents a lot faster. We of course have to change our chemical program. We’re actually adding more pre-emergents, which is more cost that we incur because of the winter that we’ve had. But going into it we kind of figured this in because we knew the yards would be harder to control with the weeds because the product wasn’t going to last as long and the temperatures wouldn’t be warm enough. Our biggest thing is to adjust our program accordingly."
-Pauline Kipfmueller, owner of Turfgarde Lawn & Shrub Care in Loganville, Ga.
