Headline News 11/4/2009 New England Irrigation Completes Reclaimed Water Irrigation Project
A new 38-acre mall is now equipped with an efficient system using mostly rainwater.

DEDHAM, MASS. – New England Irrigation, a water irrigation installation operator in the Northeast, announced that the company has completed a reclaimed water irrigation project at the newly constructed Legacy Place Mall in Dedham, Mass.

The Legacy Place Mall is a 38-acre facility with multiple buildings, parking lots, turf and more than 4,000 trees and shrubs. New England Irrigation designed and installed a reclaimed water irrigation system that uses water from three tank farms totaling approximately 280,000 gallons to irrigate the turf, trees and shrubs located throughout the mall facility.

Water is captured and diverted through a series of piping systems that collect rainwater from rooftops and parking lot catch basins. The collected water is filtered and then pumped throughout the site to deliver a precise amount of water to each of the thousands of plant species. The system designed for this customer will irrigate the facility on a daily basis for a period of up to 12 days. One inch of rainwater will replenish the entire system.

“We are pleased to have completed this state-of-the-art project for Legacy Place Mall,” said Eric Zima, owner of New England Irrigation. "The implementation of this project will not only beautify the natural landscape of this mall but will also reduce irrigation expenses for this customer at the same time. The challenge of this project was to balance the plant’s regular irrigation needs while ensuring adequate future water supply.”

Great to see Mass and Mass contractors addressing the opportunity of water conservation in such a way. With more committment and creativity, we could easily see many more examples of this smart use of water in the industry nationwide. I am wondering if the contractor used the new Precision Series Spray nozzles by the Toro Company? I hear they use 35% less water then any other spray nozzle and yet their uniformity and efficiency numbers are much higher then any other traditional spray nozzle. I say if you committed to go, go all the way.

A great effort and article. I, too, would like to see the numbers on this project. OK, Virginia residents, take note and get on the bandwagon. Katherine Brooks, VA certified landscape designer

Glad to finally see more of this stormwater reuse being implemented. This benefits everyone. Would like to have seen a reference to the system's financial feasability and a cost breakdown - as a way of encouraging more of these kinds of projects.
