Phil Mastroianni Corp. uses dormant oil to help protect trees from diseases and anti-desiccants as a bulwark against the harsh effects of winter. Yet the mild winters that have occurred recently in Boston have changed the frequency of these services.
“Especially now, with the warmer temperatures, things are starting to bud earlier,” says owner Phil Mastroianni Jr. “This is a big time for applying dormant oils. After that’s completed, we’re basically monitoring it throughout the summertime.”
The rise in dormant oil applications to control insects and eggs in early spring has meant a corresponding fall in anti-desiccants. “Anti-desiccants are basically used to save the plant from any hard, bad winter that might be coming,” he says. “People felt they may not have needed it this year.”
Although offering dormant oil and anti-desiccants are among the typical, premium services that Mastroianni Corp. offers its higher-end residential customers, some of the company’s more customized treatments include root injections for mature trees, monitoring fertilizer balance based on location, and targeted insect treatments.
One of Mastroianni Jr.’s favorite services involves transplanting large shrubs and trees. The second generation business owner takes great pride in saving a plant that might otherwise be cut down, and has been successfully relocating trees for decades.
Some of the steps that must be taken to ensure the successful establishment of a transplant include determining the specimen’s health, testing the soil, providing pre-care, hand shaping and tying the root ball and selecting the correct after-care.
Mastroianni Jr. regularly counsels homeowners undertaking construction projects not to assume that a favorite tree or shrub must necessarily be cut down. He works diligently to determine if the plant can be saved, then implements a relocation plan if possible.
