LiveRoof helps projects earn LEED credits

SPRING LAKE, Mich. — LiveRoof, LLC announced that the LiveRoof Hybrid Green Roof System can contribute to projects earning LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credits in categories worth twenty or more points. LEED < from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a green building certification program that encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices.

“LiveRoof goes above and beyond for LEED," said Dave MacKenzie, horticulturalist and president of LiveRoof, LLC. "Our modules are made in 100 percent recycled material, and we have a national network of regional growers for sourcing our soil and plants. That's why LiveRoof can generally have more impact on LEED credits than other green roof systems."

SUSTAINABLE SITES:

Protect or Restore Habitat and Maximize Open Space: SS 5.1 Site Development, Protect or Restore Habitat (1 point) and SS 5.2 Site Development, Maximize Open Space (1 point)

Storm Water Design: SS 6.1 Quantity Control (1 point) and SS 6.2 Quantity Control (one point)

Heat Island Effect: SS 7.1 Heat Island Effect - Non-Roof (1 point) and SS 7.2 Heat Island Effect - Roof (1 point)

WATER EFFICIENCY:

Water-Efficient Landscaping: WE 1.1 Reduce by 50 percent (2 points) and WE 1.3 No Potable Water Use or No Irrigation (2 points)

ENERGY & ATMOSPHERE:

Optimize Energy Performance: EA 1.1 to 1.19 (1 to 19 points)

MATERIALS & RESOURCES:  

Construction Waste Management: MR 2 (1 or 2 points)

Recycled Content: MR 4.1-4.2 (1 or 2 points)

Regional Materials: MR 5.1-5.2 (1 or 2 points)

Rapidly Renewable Materials: MR 6 (1 point)

"For some projects, LiveRoof may contribute for Innovation in Design credits, such as Plant Preservation and Restorative Use of Vegetative Waste," said Shannan Gibb-Randall, landscape architect, InSite Design Studio, Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich. "And up to four points are possible in Regional Priority for having a green roof."

"With LEED, so much depends on the size of the green roof and the extent to which different defined features are integrated into overall building design," said Teresa A.
