If there’s one thing you can say about the lawn and landscape business, it’s that it's service oriented. That means service to the customers, but also service to the community. More than 400 green industry volunteers from 30 states took the time to travel to Arlington Cemetery for PLANET’s Renwal and Remembrance Day on July 28, donating time, supplies and equipment to beautify the grounds.
Ron Dunn, vice president of operations for Greenscape in Durham, N.C., was volunteering for the first time at the event, but giving back has long been a part of the company culture. Greenscape has done work with Habitat for Humanity, the Girls and Boys clubs of Raleigh and Young Life, among others. There’s even a form on their website where organizations can request a project. “Every year, our company tries to do two or three big projects in our local market and we actually have someone in the outreach program that reviews the projects,” Dunn says.
Daniel Martin, Permaloc marketing coordinator and PLANET committee member, brought the whole family down to volunteer at Arlington. “The giving back aspect is one of the things we love about the landscape industry,” he said. “They love to give back.”
When she heard about the event, his wife, Deborah Robinson, said she had to attend. She usually picks and chooses where she travels with Daniel, but this was something she had to do. “I thought this whole day today is something you don’t get to do,” she said. “It’s an opportunity that you just can’t say no to.”
After her two nephews expressed a serious interest in attending, she, Daniel, her sister and her nephews planned a short vacation around the event. While the adults spent the day laying down lime, the kids helped lead the children’s group activities.
