ValleyCrest awards employees with trucks for safety compliance

Since the program started in 2002 to reinforce a safety culture, 47 trucks have been given out.

CALABASAS, Calif. – ValleyCrest Landscape Cos. rewarded five of its safest employees with new trucks. ValleyCrest celebrated its 2011 National Safety Awareness Day by presenting new Ford Ranger trucks to recognize superior performance in workplace safety as its more than 9,000 employees gathered at locations across the country.

“Workplace safety is a top priority since ValleyCrest’s workforce is deployed outdoors on thousands of commercial customer job sites every day across the country,” said Richard A. Sperber, president and CEO of ValleyCrest. “In a typical day, our crews are out on the road in more than 4,100 trucks, pulling more than 2,200 trailers to job sites where they’ll operate some 8,000 pieces of equipment including cranes, dozers, loaders, compactors and mowers. That’s a lot of moving parts at a multitude of locations and it requires us to be on our toes every minute.”

This year marks the ninth year that ValleyCrest has awarded new trucks during which time 47 trucks have been given to workers. Since 2002, the company’s overall claims (at-fault, auto liability claims and OSHA recordable workers compensation claims) have decreased 60 percent over the nine year period.

Part of a model safety incentive program, the annual Safety Awareness Day truck giveaway reinforces ValleyCrest’s deep commitment to workplace safety by encouraging employees to perform throughout the year accident free. To qualify, full-time field employees must complete one-year of service with no accidents and be employed by a branch that meets or exceeds the company’s threshold safety standards. ValleyCrest’s annual safety incentive program draws winners from a pool of more than 4,000 eligible employees who qualified across five different U.S. regions.

The five new Ford truck winners for 2011 include:

  • Manuel Gonzalez, a union journeyman for the Development Division in Sacramento, Calif., who’s been with the company for 12 years.
  • Alejandro Lerma Zea, a gardener in the Maintenance Division in Riverside, Calif., who’s been with the company for 15 years.
  • Agustin Lara Marcos, a gardener in the Maintenance Division in Charlotte, N.C., who’s been with the company for seven years.
  • Jose Luis Yepiz, a crew leader in the Maintenance Division in Longboat Key, Fla., who’s been with the company for 13 years.
  • Ricky Henderson, a spray technician in the Maintenance Division in Jacksonville, Fla., who’s been with the company for eight years.

“Despite the challenges of the economy, ValleyCrest continues to reward our safest workers with new trucks,” said Mike Dingman, senior vice president and a 31-year company veteran who oversees ValleyCrest’s safety program. ”Giving away trucks reflects the extreme priority and commitment the company places on safety. At ValleyCrest, safety is not lip service, it is a very important part of everyone’s work habits.”

ValleyCrest’s employees must follow a stringent safety program in order to meet the challenges faced every day on customer’s job sites. The company, which operates in 20 states and several foreign countries, has succeeded in building an industry-leading model that even draws attention from customers who seek to replicate it within their own organizations.

ValleyCrest’s aggressive and proactive safety training initiatives include a new-hire safety orientation; monthly training sessions for all supervisory field management; weekly safety conference calls; safety training compliance; a toll-free safety hotline and weekly tailgate meetings.
