A Yard & A Half has two target markets for its design/build and installation services. There are homeowners who want to improve their landscapes or create that outdoor living environment they’ve always dreamed of. And there are designers and architects who work solo and want to partner with a firm that can execute their visions for clients.
These two markets work hand in hand. When a designer hires A Yard & A Half for construction services, referrals are born from the final result. Plus, designers and architects refer Eileen Michaels’ company to one another because design practitioners are looking for a dependable, experienced installation partner to complete their projects, she says.
“Our project managers meet with designers and architects and provide a quote, and they actually follow the installation crew from beginning to end, managing the entire project,” Michaels explains of how the partnership works.
Michael says the relationship works for designers and architects because they can sell clients the installation without worrying about providing extra (costly) construction plans. “We have enough experience in construction so they can save their clients some money that way and even use that as a pitch,” Michaels says. “It’s not necessary for (designers) to illustrate to us how to build a patio or a driveway.”
Now, about half of A Yard & A Half’s design/build division is dedicated to working with designers and architects. The other half focuses on design/build projects from scratch because the firm has landscape designers on staff who sell projects.
How does Michaels make these designer/architect connections? By networking with peers in professional organizations and reaching out to the community. “Many designers and architects don’t have their own crews, so they are looking for companies like ours to partner with so they can bring their projects to life,” she says.
