Using bionutrition can give your customers something extra.

Because bionutrition won’t cause any damage to a lawn, there may be no harm in trying it on a customer. That is, unless the customer would be very unhappy that the lawn didn’t have the extra benefit that you sold them on.

And what is that extra benefit? Clark Throssel, director of research for Lebanon Turf, says a turf scientist would take a research plot with just the NPK fertilizer, and then take the exact same fertilizer plus a bionutritional component, and they would have those two research plots side by side and they would compare it over a growing season. From there, they could tell what benefits the bionutrition would have compared to the regular treatment.

“I think that people are beginning to see, in some cases, better performance, usually associated with the stress,” he says. “It’s usually heat stress or drought stress, or both, that you see a little better performance under those stressful conditions, either going into droughts or recovering from drought where you have the NPK plus the bionutritional component.

“And like I said, there are differences that people can see visually. The challenge is does it happen 100 percent of the cases? No, and I think that is part of the frustration that people have working with these products. You don’t see it 100 percent of the time, but you do see it in enough cases that, like I said, in people’s eyes they are beginning to say, ‘Hey, there is something here and it’s worth pursuing and it’s worth investigating.’”
