John Newlin, owner and president of Quality Sprinkling Systems Services, was recently elected chair of the Irrigation Association’s Contractor Common Interest Group (CCIG). According to the IA, the CCIG is focused on three main goals: Enhancing the professionalism and reputation of irrigation contractors, influencing legislation and developing business standard best practices.

Newlin says his primary goal is to help develop a program for the service techs. “That’s the reason I got involved and is my primary focus,” he says. “We want to get that program headed in the right direction.”

It’s expected to take about two years to get the program fully up and running, says Newlin. “We’re in the process of doing an outline right now on what it should look like as far as technical abilities in the field and then applying educational modules to get each individual up to speed. We have some ideas going, but everything is only in the preliminary stages.”

Newlin also hopes to have better communication between the IA, CCIG and contractors in the field. “We will have a web page up on the IA website that’s geared specifically to contractors,” he says. “That will be a communication tool. We’re really going to work on being more transparent to our members and communicating more with them. This website will be a go-to-place for information and discussion and we’re hoping to launch it soon.”
