Salem State wins ASLA design award

SALEM, Mass. – The Boston chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has recognized Marsh Hall on the campus of Salem State University for outstanding landscape design.

MSLA presented its 2011 honor award in the category of “College and University Design” to Salem State officials during a recent ceremony at the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge. The jury for the award selection praised the landscape design by H. Keith Wagner Partnership in Burlington, Vt., for “melding the idea of a coastal campus with visible site remediation, far exceeding what would be expected on a relatively modest budget.”

“The design succeeds in its multi-part mission to make usable what was polluted while providing teaching and social spaces evocative of the site’s coastal context,” added the jury.

Designed by the architectural firm Dimella Shaffer in Boston, the five-story Marsh Hall opened its doors to over 500 Salem State University sophomores in September. The new residence hall introduces more students to Salem State’s Central Campus where the university has designed and installed a synthetic turf baseball field as a protective landfill cap, restored a building to house its music department and Bertolon School of Business, and built another residence hall – Atlantic Hall.

Marsh Hall’s location forms a courtyard to neighboring Atlantic Hall and the building has many green features, including the use of sustainable building materials such as bamboo which is used for all the millwork. An estimated 10,000 square feet of bamboo is in the lobby, the conference rooms and on the two public stair cases.
