CalStar Products has introduced permeable pavers that help manage stormwater runoff and are also suitable for vehicular applications. The latest in the company’s line of sustainably manufactured masonry, the new pavers contribute to multiple LEED credits including stormwater design quality management and quantity control.
CalStar Products uses proprietary technology to produce bricks and pavers that offer unique environmental benefits. CalStar’s process incorporates 40 percent post-industrial recycled material as the binder, and avoids the energy-intensive kiln firing required for clay pavers and the use of Portland cement contained in concrete pavers. CalStar’s unique manufacturing process uses 50-85 percent less energy and generates 85 percent less CO2 compared to traditional processes.
The ASTM-compliant permeable pavers are nominally 5” x 10” x 80mm and are designed to be installed as part of a permeable system incorporating a permeable sub-base. The pavers feature large lugs, which provide 5.9 percent open area to accommodate stormwater runoff and help prevent flooding. With the 80mm depth, the CalStar permeable pavers are ideal for vehicular traffic, making them a sustainable choice for applications such as parking lots, alleys, crosswalks and plazas.
CalStar permeable pavers are available in eight solid and three range colors, and can be packaged for mechanical installation. Additionally, they are ADA compliant for slip resistance and maximum allowable space between units.
According to Craig Ratchford, vice president of sales and marketing for CalStar, stormwater management is becoming an important consideration in designing streetscapes. “By reducing stormwater runoff, these permeable pavers will allow communities to effectively promote groundwater recharge,” said Ratchford. “In fact, many municipalities are now mandating stormwater runoff control as a tool for low-impact development (LID), and our permeable pavers are ideal for this.” The LID design approach to stormwater runoff emphasizes conservation and use of on-site natural features to protect water quality.
