SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Shasta Landscaping was awarded the President’s Award by the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA), San Diego Chapter for its green roof project at the Charles David Keeling Apartments at University of California, San Diego. Also, Shasta received two more honors from the CLCA San Diego for work at the Origen Model homes in Mission Valley.

“Our team is thrilled to be recognized by the CLCA for our work,” said Paul Tilley, vice president, Shasta Landscaping, Inc. “We are especially excited to be recognized for our green roof. This was our first green roof and the first of its kind at a San Diego University.”

A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and planted over a waterproof casing. Green roofs help absorb rainwater, reduce heat, provide insulation, create a habitat for wildlife and help lower urban air temperatures. Shasta used more than 4,000 drought tolerant succulents, flowering plants and low-spreading shrubs such as English Stonecrop, Reflexed Stonecrop and Snow-in-Summer on the UCSD green roof. Additionally, all the water used for the roof garden is recycled on site and reused for irrigation along with all residents’ water from laundry, sinks and showers.

“One of the CLCA’s core values is reverence for the Earth and respect for its resources,” said Sharon May, president of the CLCA San Diego Chapter. “Shasta’s green roof is a shining example of that value. Not only did Shasta create something beautiful, but the roof will have a tremendous impact on the energy consumption used by the building and its residents - it helps to improve everyone’s quality of life. This is the type of work that the CLCA expects to see more of in the future.”
