The U.S.-and Canada-based company dedicates day of charity for family’s loss.

| December 6, 2011

WACO, Texas – After the loss of The Grounds Guys’ founders’ relatives, the family-owned company has dedicated an annual volunteer effort in their memory.

Seven years ago, Peter van Stralen, president of The Grounds Guys Canada, suffered the loss of his sister Monika Woerlen along with her seven children in a house fire. Since then, the company has honored the family with a day of volunteer work. This year, the company has named the Nov. 8 anniversary “Monika Day,” and has partnered with The Ronald McDonald House to support families in need.

Company sites throughout the U.S. and Canada banded together to donate time, services and household products valuing over $6,000.

“The Ronald McDonald House program offers more than just a place for families,” said Ron Madera, president of The Grounds Guys. “It’s a ‘home away from home’ where staff and volunteers strive to provide a sense of normalcy for their children and families during a chaotic and traumatic time. It is an honor to be a corporate partner with RMHC and be able to contribute to the atmosphere of compassion and understanding they bring to these families through the Charity’s cornerstone program.”

“Monika Day” will become an annual event throughout the company, and The Grounds Guys will continue the partnership with RMHC.

“We learned from this tragedy that life is short and the time we have with our loved ones is precious,” Van Stralen said. “Since that fateful day, we have experienced great comfort and strength from our faith and the unbelievable support that comes from pulling together as a family.”
