Marty Grunder outlines a plan to develop into a better leader, regardless of your industry.

As part of a day-long education symposium sponsored by Lawn & Landscape, Marty Grunder spoke to attendees about how they can develop themselves and their teams into better leaders.

Here is some of his advice:

-          Remind your people what a win looks like. Don't nag them about little stuff that they messed up or forgot, but instead remind them what to focus on – your core values, mission and vision for the company. How will they know they’ve been successful? “Your number one job is to chart a course,” Grunder said. “Where are we going and why are we doing it?”

-          Grunder is constantly driving home his company’s mission statement to his employees. He quizzes crews randomly when they drive out of the yard. They get donuts if they get the statement correct, and if they get it wrong, they get daily visits from Grunder until they remember it.

-          When managing employees, there are three reasons people don't do what you want them to do:

o   You haven't trained them or equipped them properly

o   it's a capacity problem. They just don’t have the skills or aptitude to do the job – like putting a right-fielder at shortstop.

o   It’s an attitude problem. They might be smart enough, but don’t have the temperament to do the job.

-          you have to live by example and illustrate the values that you want your people to exhibit

demonstrate the activities you want to see in your people “Vision without execution is hallucination. Leaders do the things other people don't feel like doing.”

-          Think about your company and day-to-day operations from your employees’ perspective. “If you went to work for your own company, what would you want to learn?” Grunder asked.
