California’s rose industry is at a crossroads, according to an article in The Sacramento Bee. In recent years, homeowners have traded their big tea roses for low-maintenance, compact shrub roses. This trend has resulted in sagging sales for the industry overall, and less interest in breeding new varieties.
"At some point, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. [Landscape] roses will be all you have; the beautiful, unique hybrid teas will be gone," Charlie Anderson, president of Weeks Roses told the paper.
