Organic or synthetic?

Experts share their opinions on biostimulant options.

When it comes to biostimulants, which is better: organic materials or synthetic? While research on the matter is still thin, the experts are pointing toward preferring organic compounds.

David Beaudreau is an expert on biostimulants and co-chair of The Biostimulant Coalition. He advises that companies should go organic for efficiency and economic reasons.

“The organic side of the market is the preferred area for companies. It’s better reviewed and better differentiated. Synthetic biostimulants will have a much smaller role in the market," he says, adding that synthetic biostimulants were “similar in function and results.”

Both Beaudreau and Edward Fleming, agronomist and owner of Lawns Unlimited in Delaware, advise organic biostimulants. However, Fleming mentioned that organic biostimulants are often paired with inorganic fertilizers to lessen the amount of fertilizer needed and the amount of nutrient runoff to nearby watersheds.

Biostimulants are a newly researched subject, but studies suggest that they help improve plant metabolism, increase a plant’s tolerance and resistance to abiotic stress, facilitate nutrient assimilation, translocation and use, enhance the plant’s produce, improve a plant’s water efficiency and enhance soil fertility.
