Monarch Landscape acquires two companies

Monarch Landscape Holdings, an umbrella company formed by a former ValleyCrest executive, added two commercial maintenance firms to its growing roster.

In two separate deals in March, Monarch acquired Land Systems in San Diego and Hort Tech Landscape Management in Indio, California.

“We brought in two great companies that fit our work, our customer profile, our culture and are both deeply focused on customers and deeply focused on their employees and providing a great product in the markets they’re in,” said Monarch CEO Brian Helgoe.

Helgoe said the two companies will operate under their current brands, and their management teams – Matt Shaffer at Landsystems and Fernando Martin and Bryan Jensen at Hort Tech – will remain in place.

In April of 2016, Monarch acquired Jensen Landscape in San Jose, California, and Northwest Landscape Services in Woodinville, Washington. Monarch, backed by private equity firm One Rock Capital, also owns Signature Landscape Services in Redmond, Washington.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Jensen Landscape reported 2016 revenue of $46.5 million and Northwest reported $30 million revenue in 2015.

Helgoe said Monarch is still looking for more companies to buy, specifically in the mountain and desert states.

“We are wide open to doing more acquisitions in the future,” he said. “We’re primarily looking west of the Mississippi. We fulfilled the goal of getting up and down the West Coast and we'd like to fill in with some of those acquisitions.”
