Patrick Crais uses technology whenever he can.

Patrick Crais, owner and founder of Blue Watchdog Conservation in San Diego, says clients are often surprised that the company produces almost zero paper. “Everything is done on iPads or the iPhone,” he says. “I think that makes for a more efficient company and one that works better for me. There are a lot of reasons I love technology.”

I hate printing paper. “We’re a conservation company and printing a lot of paper just automatically goes against that concept,” Crais says. “It’s also a lot easier not to have all that paper. With technology, everything is more easily accessible.”

I don’t need an office. “With technology we don’t really need an office,” admits Crais. “My office could be my front porch. Or the beach. We don’t want to build a bigger footprint with a big office. We can do our work from anywhere and that’s a wonderful thing.”

It makes us look better. “There are still a lot of people in the industry who want to have that binder to show the client,” Crais says. “But there’s no reason you can’t show the client the same presentation on your iPad. We use a lot of videos instead of handing out brochures. Frankly I believe clients prefer that. Technology makes you look a lot more professional and it also helps you provide a better service.”
