Selected students enrolled in accredited turf management programs were awarded with scholarships from the New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA) at the Grounds Exposition. Teresa Damaske from Cornell University received the John Cornman Scholarship. Other NYSTA recipients included Jason Anderson, Brian Brannick, Carl Hopkins, Jason Stroman and Douglas Vanderlee from SUNY Delhi, and Ryan Daly from SUNY Cobleskill.
The Michigan Turfgrass Foundation announced its 2001 board of directors. Tom Smith is president, Gerald Grossi is vice president, Kathleen Hilbert is treasurer, Tom Doppel is assistant treasurer, Paul Muelle is recording secretary, Gordon LaFontaine is executive director and Tom Gray is past president.
The new board of directors for the Western Nursery & Landscape Association was announced during the Big Show 2001 in Kansas City, Mo. Jan Olson is president and Eric Sjulin is vice president. Directors include Nancy Blecha, E.B. Gee, Bryand Kinghorn, Cameron Rees, Steve Ritter and Hugh Stevenson.
The Associated Landscape Contractors of America presented its first Outstanding Educator of the Year award to Professor Frank Millsap of Richland College. Millsap is coordinator of the horticulture department and owns and operates an independent landscape business. His association involvement includes ALCA Student Career Days, the Certified Landscape Technician program and several committees. He will retire from teaching later this year.
Dick Hutton received the 2000 Nurserymen’s Hall of Fame Award presented by the American Nursery & Landscape Association. Hutton is a past president of the organization.
