"Clematis King" Will Unveil New Collection at Mid-Am

Well-known clematis cultivator will show off a new patio-ready collection of vines at the January trade show in partnership with Hines Horticulture.

Part of the Patio Clematis Collection, 'Cezanne' blooms from early to mid-summer, with flowers measuring 6 to 7 inches wide. The compact vine  grows only 2 to 3 feet, making it excellent for use with well-trained shrubs. Photo: Hinesvines.com

Another member of the new Patio line, 'Picardy's' 6-inch flowers bloom from June to September. This extremely free-flowering clematis grows up to 3 feet high and offers a high flower and bud count. Evison, who is credited with cultivating more than half of all clematis sold in North America, will present his new Raymond Evison Patio Clematis Collection, the first clematis bred specifically for containers, at the Hines Horticulture booth No. 1420.

These super-performers barely reach 3 feet and are covered with jewel-toned blossoms, making them ideal for small spaces and containers. All three are grown in decorative containers for high sales impact and provide home gardeners with instant color for the patio or deck.

Evison will speak about his new introductions and demonstrate innovative new garden uses for the “queen of the vines” at the Hines booth. On Thursday, Jan. 20, he will speak about his new introductions and what he has in the pipeline during a private gala for a select group of Hines retailers.

Last year Hines, introduced the long-blooming Raymond Evison Royal Horticultural Society Bicentenary Clematis Collection, featuring four spectacular clematis that are heartier, easier to grow and bloom much longer than traditional clematis sold in the United States.

With more than 40 years of experience growing clematis, Mr. Evison raises 4.6 million clematis a year, producing 25 percent of the world’s clematis market and 50 percent of North America’s. At the height of production in April and May, 90 employees make 45,000 cuttings a day. In his native Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth II honored Evison and his work in 2000 by appointing him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to horticulture on the Isle of Guernsey, Great Britain.
