ABOUT INDUSTRY BUZZ

Each week, our industry experts will tackle a variety of topics that affect the industry and discuss how those issues can impact you as a green industry professional.

Be sure to share your thoughts on the Lawn & Landscape Message Board. Let's get the buzz going!

Maybe it’s no coincidence that grass and money are the same color.

The lawn is an important financial investment. A healthy lawn and shrubs add curb appeal, but the value is more than aesthetic. In a survey of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, 95 percent of respondents said landscaping increases the value of a home. Some studies say lawn improvements can yield a 400 percent return on investment when you sell.

Maximizing a lawn’s value requires expertise, time, energy and money. For some homeowners, it’s a labor of love. Other homeowners are less inclined to do it all themselves, or perhaps they lack the time and energy for the task. The homeowners who need a little extra help often turn to lawn care professionals.

“Hiring a qualified lawn service is not an expense, it’s an investment,” explains Kirk Hurto, vice president, technical services for TruGreen. “A beautiful, healthy lawn is like an outdoor living room. It adds tremendous value to a home, especially in a soft real estate market. With regard to resale value, it’s one of the best home investments you can make.”

Healthy lawns provide lots of benefits, financial and otherwise. Consider all the selling points for a well maintained lawn:

  • Enhanced property value – 95 percent of home appraisers can’t be wrong.
  • Cooler local environment – roughly 50 percent of heat striking a turf area is eliminated by transpiration.
  • Healthier local environment – one acre of grass can absorb hundreds of pounds of sulfur dioxide, which is created by fossil fuels.
  • Reduced dust and dirt – better for breathing and cleaner, too.
  • Erosion control – A typical suburban lawn can absorb 6,000 gallons of rainwater without noticeable runoff and the grass acts as a primary filter to help clean the water.
  • Aesthetics – your home will be more attractive and become a source of pride.
  • Many homeowners strike a balance when hiring professional lawn help. The homeowner performs some of the routine lawn care like weekly trimming and watering, but hires a professional to provide lawn feeding, weed control and expert advice.
