Lawn Care Business Owners in Florida Lament High Gas Prices

Lawn care business owners are having a tough time making ends meet because of high gas prices

Lawn care business owners are having a hard time making ends meet because of rising fuel costs.

And owners in Hernando County, Fla., feel if they raise their prices they will lose customers.

People are already dealing with higher prices on everything because of higher fuel costs and lawn care might be one of the things people opt to cut because it's not a necessity.

Patrick Pasculli and his wife Nancy have owned a landscaping business for 20 years in Spring Hill.

"It's going very bad for us," Patrick Pasculli said.

"My husband is taking side jobs to now compensate," Nancy Pasculli said.

"Years ago with $10 you filled up and worked all day. Today after $25 he's coming back later in the day for another $20."

Pasculli said a lot of lawn care businesses are folding up. Business owners are trying to pass along some of the cost increase to customers but with today's tough financial times people don't want to pay more.

"Gas goes up you should incorporate it in your price," Nancy Pasculli said.

Shirley Sipple doesn't have a problem with that philosophy but a lot of people Bay News 9 talked to did.

"I'm perfectly sympathetic to them I really am," Sipple said.

J Palms also has a landscaping business. He's worried people will stop paying to have their lawns cut and start cutting themselves if he has to raise his prices.

"Some might, some might not," Palms said.

Pasculli said he's hoping gas prices will start going down soon but if they don't one way or another he will do what it takes to keep his mowers on the job.

"I have to find a way, yes," Patrick Pasculli said.

A lot of the landscapers said if gas reaches $4 a gallon this summer they're not sure if they'll be able to stay in business.

Two years ago the Pascullis would spend about $150 a week on gas. Now they're spending close to $300 a week and that number should go up when they get busy this summer.
