Aquatrols Corp., based in Paulsboro, N.J., has been granted a United States Patent for its invention of synergistic blends of certain surfactants that rapidly increase the wetting of water-repellent soils. Named as inventors on the patent are Stanley Kostka, director of technology, and Paul Bially, formulations chemist.
This marks the 10th patent issued to Aquatrols in the last eight years, and according to Dr. Kostka, reflecting the aggressive approach being taken at Aquatrols to discover innovative technologies to optimize the effectiveness of water and inputs applied to turfgrass and agricultural crops.
According to the inventors, this technology will enable turf managers, farmers and other growers – and possibly even homeowners – to dramatically increase the efficiency of their water use and reduce over all water consumption. “This technology fits our mission of continuing to search for and find ways that our customers can use resources more effectively – especially water,” adds Andy Moore, director of business development and marketing. “This synergistic technology is already being applied in several new products, such as Dispatch and IrrigAid Gold, to allow turf managers and farmers to irrigate more effectively and reduce water consumption.”
The invention covered by this patent is the discovery that blends of certain alkylpolyglycoside (APG) and block copolymer surfactants are synergistic in enhancing the infiltration of water and aqueous compositions into water-repellent soils to a degree that surpasses previous achievements in this area. Patents are pending worldwide.
“Our discovery of synergism between APG and block copolymer surfactants is a unique and intrinsic property associated with blends of diverse members of these groups of compounds,” comments Co-inventor Paul Bially.
