The Massachusetts Arborists Association (MAA) will celebrate Arbor Day April 25 with its 29th annual volunteer project at the Codman Estate in Lincoln, Mass. An estimated 200 MAA members will professionally prune, plant, and transplant an array of specimen shade trees throughout one of the state’s most scenic & historic properties.
The Codman Carriage House and Gardens are located on the grounds of the Codman Estate in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The grounds feature a hidden Italianate garden, c. 1900, with perennial beds, statuary, and a reflecting pool filled with waterlilies, as well as an English cottage garden, c. 1930. The mansion was built in 1740 by the politically prominent Russell family. In 1790, John Codman took control of the property with a goal to create a country estate fashioned in the English manner. He made extensive improvements to the original Georgian house and surrounding grounds. The property, known by the family as The Grange, became a powerful force in the lives of five generations of the Codman family. Each generation to live there left its mark, and the estate that was originally a country retreat gradually came to symbolize the family's distinguished past. The Codman Estate is now owned and maintained by Historic New England.
This is the first year that the MAA has partnered with Historic New England for their annual Arbor Day Celebration. Chris McGinty, MCA of Framingham Parks & Recreation will serve as chairman of the MAA’s 2008 Arbor Day committee. He will be assisted by committee co-chair Mike Lueders, MCA, MCLP of Lueders Tree & Landscape Co, Inc. and other MAA leaders.
The MAA is a professional trade organization that serves the commercial arboriculture industry. The MAA advances the goals of its members through education, research support, certification, and promotion of the value of arboriculture to the public.
