On cool season turfs, autumn is the optimum time to control broadleaf weeds. In many areas where moisture has been plentiful, broadleaf weeds are actively growing. The application of a broadleaf weed herbicide will reduce weed populations both this fall and next spring. In addition, this is a good time to make a fertilizer application. A well-balanced fertilizer will promote recovery of thin areas and increase overall the plant density of lawns. Fertilization should also help the lawns recover from dollar spot and help reduce the severity of rust.
On warm-season lawns, fertilize with a balanced fertilizer that is predominantly potassium. Adequate potassium levels in warm-season grasses are associated with increased tolerance to winter injury. Lawns that are weak, especially warm-season turfgrasses like Bermuda growing in shade are prone to winter injury.
Tall fescue lawns in the southeast should be overseeded when possible. Tall fescue is a bunch of grass, which tends to clump when it loses density. Overseeding reduces the tendency for tall fescue to bunch.
