The United Nations has started a campaign to plant a billion trees worldwide in 2007. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai inspired the idea for the Billion Tree Campaign, which encourages the planting of indigenous trees by governments, businesses, community groups and individuals.
The campaign asks people to get involved by pledging and planting a tree. Other ways to get involved include teaching a child to plant a tree or inspiring schools, churches and youth groups to pledge and plant trees.
