In the spring of 2013, The Pattie Group was jolted into a new reality of running without its founder and owner Steve Pattie. Crewmembers learned about his stroke, and sons Jonas and Brian Pattie picked up the reins and began executing on the Novelty, Ohio, company’s strategic plan.
“We were running like crazy to sell and keep the business afloat,” Jonas Pattie says. Things were still rough from the economic downturn, the owner was down, but an important step was needed.
As part of their strategic plan the company embarked on a project that was meaningful given the new trajectory. That was to reimagine the vision, mission and values. “We had to get everyone focused on what makes us great and who we are as a company,” Pattie says.
Managers and employees gathered for company-wide discussions. “We had a mission but we needed to spend time on defining our core values,” Pattie says.
This was important to keep everyone’s eyes on what matters in spite of a challenging time with ownership transition and change in general.
The Pattie Group retained its 30-plus year trademarked slogan “Only Mother Nature Does It Better.” It’s the guiding statement of the company’s purpose.
Its core values include:
• Delivering “The Pattie Experience.” That means striving to wow customers, vendors, everyone the company works with and/or serves, including each other.
• “Planting Ideas for a Better Life.” The idea is that landscaping is more than outdoor spaces and plant material, It’s about improving quality of life.
• Providing dynamic, innovative and distinctive work
• Passionate people
• Teamwork
• Diligence and determination
• Honesty and integrity
• Charity and kindness
• Humility
• Personal growth and continuous improvement
• Safety
• Family first
• Having fun
