Plant picks evolve over the generations. Lou Palazzi Jr. remembers his grandfather Augusto’s love for gold tip juniper. “He used a lot of colorful evergreens, plants like blue haven juniper and different types of cypress,” he says.
Lou Palazzi Sr. evolved the plant palette by branching out into flowering shrubs like red-stemmed dogwoods. “He loved viburnums of all kinds,” Palazzi says.
Lou Jr. has an affinity for blooming perennials like knockout roses and drift roses. “Perennials were not as fully developed in my father’s time as they are now,” he says. “Believe it or not, perennials are relatively new in the last 30 years.”
Palazzi Landscape Gardening is known for its use of color, Palazzi says. That’s one aspect of their landscape design that separates a decadent garden project from one that’s just “rice pudding.”
“We do a lot of color,” he says.
