Setting yourself up with a plow and a truck was fairly easy 40 years ago when the choices were limited. Today, not only are there a multitude of options in plow materials and designs, but the truck market has made the process even more complex.
Here are some tips to consider when looking for a new rig.
- Take your time and do research on front axle weight ratings and snowplow prep packages. Prep packages typically consist of a transmission cooler and a bigger alternator, but sometimes include beefier suspension.
- Consider engine size and type as those choices will impact the weight of the plow the truck can accept. For example, if it’s a diesel, you’ve just taken away 300 gross pounds from the plow because it’s a heavier engine.
- Before you purchase a truck, check with your snowplow provider to make sure a plow is available for that make and model. With plow applications getting more complicated, not all plow manufacturers are making plow packages for all trucks.
- Make sure your plow is rated for the type of work you intend for it. Plow manufacturers are making lighter weight plows, but they don’t all stand up to the rigors of commercial use.
