Caterpillar Manager Appointed to EPA Committee

Clean Air Act Advisory Committee provides guidance to EPA on air quality issues.

PEORIA, Ill. – Caterpillar has strengthened its industry leadership in the area of corporate social responsibility with the appointment of a company manager to a committee that helps advise the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on air quality issues.

John Campbell, general manager of engineering for the Caterpillar Large Power Systems Division, has been appointed by EPA to serve on its Clean Air Act Advisory Committee (CAAAC).

"It is an honor for Caterpillar to have John Campbell appointed to this committee," said Caterpillar Large Power Systems Division Vice President Gary Stroup.  "John's commitment to producing the highest quality products for our customers while also focusing on efforts to reduce emissions will serve Caterpillar, the committee and the industry very well."

Campbell, a 39-year veteran of Caterpillar, was a leader of the research and development effort that resulted in the invention of the company's ACERT(R) Technology.

ACERT Technology is the largest product development program in the company's history, and it positions Caterpillar to meet current and future emissions regulations for engines used in on-highway and off-road machine applications worldwide.

"The development of ACERT Technology is just one example of Caterpillar's commitment to making sound business decisions that also make good sense for the environment," said Caterpillar Group President Doug Oberhelman. "John Campbell has been an integral part of Team Caterpillar as the company's engines have dramatically reduced emissions.  I'm sure John will be a great asset to the committee and the country."

The CAAAC is a senior-level policy committee appointed by EPA that advises the agency on issues related to implementing the Clean Air Act amendments of 1990.  It includes approximately 60 senior managers and experts representing the industry, state and local government, environmental and public interest groups, academic institutions, unions, trade associations and utilities.

Commenting on the new members appointed to the committee, EPA Assistant Administrator Jeff Holmstead said, "We welcome you to the Clean Air Act Advisory Committee and look forward to working with you on the critical air issues that the committee addresses."

Caterpillar is an active participant in other environmental stewardship initiatives such as the EPA's Climate Leaders program in which the company has set aggressive long-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.  Other initiatives include the U.S. EPA Clean School Bus program and Caterpillar's participation as a founding member and supporter of the Health Effects Institute, an industry and EPA organization designed to facilitate dialogue and fund research on emissions-related issues.

Four years in a row, Caterpillar has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, which recognizes companies that lead their industries in corporate social responsibility. Learn more at www.cat.com.
