The Summer of 2004 marks the return of notorious "Brood X" of Cicada in Eastern states ranging from Michigan to New York to as far south as North Carolina.
Often mistaken for locust, Cicada are black, shrimp-sized bugs with beady red eyes that fester underground for seventeen years before finally emerging en mass into the open air.
This year's Brood X (the "X" actually isn't as ominous as it sounds, representing the tenth brood of Cicada) is not only the largest brood ever, but has caught the fascination— and sometimes fear—of the public with the Cicada receiving major media attention from various outlets including David Letterman recently salting his monologues and bits with a large number of Cicada jokes.
As Cicada Mania sweeps the eastern part of the country Earth Sun Moon Trading Company is proud to introduce a hilarious line of Cicada t-shirts for everyone who just can't get enough of these mesmerizing locust-like bugs. The first shirt, "Brood X Tour" is a play on the typical "reunion tour" rock t-shirt, with a design featuring a band made up of Cicada giving a concert, and text that reads "Seventeen Year Reunion" and lists all of the Cicada hot spots which they will be "gigging" at in 2004.
The second shirt, "Cicada Cafe," (yes, Virginia, there actually are people out there EATING Cicada) features the design of a Cicada holding a sign which reads "Yes, We Are Open" all beneath the text "Cicada Cafe—Open May thru July." The third Cicada shirt, "Cicada Invasion," features the text "I survived the 2004 Cicada Invasion" literally crawling with various different Cicada.
"Brood X is likely to be the largest insect emergence on Earth," according to a Cicada expert from Indiana University. Celebrate the tremendous popularity of the Brood X breed of Cicada with this clever collection of Cicada shirts.
