CLCA Donates Landscape Makeover at Shelter

California Landscape Contractors Association members donated a 10,000-square-foot landscape makeover for The Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne, Calif.

Syndicated talk show host Nick Federoff went on a road trip to visit with California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) members as they donated a 10,000-square-foot landscape makeover for The Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne, Calif.

“When I heard the CLCA was going to give a landscape makeover for such a good cause we just had to broadcast from there,” Federoff says. “What amazed me the most was the dedication of those helping to the watchful eyes of the kids as their playground was being transformed into a botanical garden wonderland.”

Spearheaded by Mike Garcia, owner of Enviroscape, a landscape contractor from Redondo Beach, with support from the CLCA, put together a collaboration of thoughts and ideas on how to maximize the 10,000 square foot area needed for the children and staff.

“This was a pretty large task to undertake, but everyone saw it was for a good cause, came together and it went off without a hitch,” Garcia says.

Tasks at hand included the removal of overgrown shrubbery, pulling out of large trees, leveling and contouring land, installation of sprinklers, defining planter beds with block borders, placement of new plants and topping off all other areas with fresh sod.

Several businesses donated materials to the cause: Enviroscape supplied much of the labor, Walla Walla Sprinkler Co. and MP Rotator installed the irrigation system, the Department of Water and Power supplied the ET controller and Southland Sod Farms supplied Marathon Sod.

Federoff made it a point to speak with project coordinator Mike Garcia, Mike Baron of MP Rotator and CLCA Chapter president, Dan Gromer. In addition, time was spent with Doris Boyington of The Richstone Family Center.

Federoff will broadcast the interview on his nationally-syndicated radio show, then have it posted on several Web sites for on-demand and podcast accessibility on: ThingsGreen.com, AdviceRadio.com and TheGreenIndustryTalkShow.com.
