The New York State Turfgrass Association held its 10th Annual Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition at the Empire State Green Industry Show in Rochester, New York. The competition is designed to test students’ knowledge of turfgrasses and the weeds, diseases, and insects that affect them. The contest, which was held on November 14, 2007, consisted of both hands-on and written tests.
Students from SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Delhi and the University of Massachusetts competed in the competition. Turf Bowl coordinator, David Chinery, Rensselaer County Cornell Cooperative Extension conducted this year’s event. High-scoring teams and individuals were recognized with cash prizes, certificates, a one-year student membership to NYSTA and the honor of taking back to their school the silver Turf Bowl.
Winners in the four-year individual competition are as follows:
1st Place – Chad Borden, SUNY Delhi - $150
2nd Place – Jonathan Semmig, SUNY Cobleskill - $100
3rd Place – Jonathan Ulmer, SUNY Cobleskill - $50
Students from SUNY Cobleskill won the four-year program team competition. They include Jonathan Ulmer, Jonathan Semmig, Kyle Elliott and Joshua Solon.
Winners in the two-year individual competition are as follows:
1st Place – Eric Newell, SUNY Delhi - $150
2nd Place – Aaron Madison, SUNY Cobleskill - $100
3rd Place – Martin Ward, SUNY Cobleskill - $50
SUNY Delhi students won the two-year program team competition. Team members are Eric Newell, Pat Joy, Eric Berninger and Dan Sattler.
