Cornell Offers Landscape Management Short Course

Cornell University is offering a landscape management short course for landscape managers and landscape architects, to be held July 28 – 30, 2004 in Ithaca, N.Y.

Learn the latest cutting-edge information for successful establishment and management of diverse landscapes from Cornell’s landscape horticulture team: Nina Bassuk, Scott Clark, Gary Couch, Brian Eshenaur, George Good, Joann Gruttadaurio, Peter Towbridge, Leslie Weston, Paul Weston and Mary Hirshfeld from Cornell Plantations.

Learn via a lively mix of lecture, discussion and hands-on field experiences. Attendees will tour established research sites and plantings in downtown Ithaca, at the Cornell Plantaions and at the Ornamentals Research Center.

Topics and events for the three-day short course include:

Day 1: Wednesday, July 28
Topic: Soils, Modification, Transplanting

  • Tools to understand site limiations and opportunities
  • Dealing with soil compaction and poor drainage
  • Site preparation and planting

  • Event: Barbecue at Bluegrass Lane and informal tour of perennials

    Day 2: Thursday, July 29
    Topic: New & Unusual Plant Material

  • Best tree species and cultivars for every site
  • Low-maintenance shrubs and ground covers
  • New and favorite perennials and annuals
  • Event: Optional winery dinner

    Day 3: Friday, July 30
    Topic: Alternative Pest Management Strategies

  • Pest management – insects, diseases, weeds
  • New invasive pest problems
  • Session adjourns at 4 p.m.

    Attendees can earn

  • ISA continuing education units
  • NYSNLA Certified Nursery Professional Recertification Credits
  • NYS DEC Pesticide Recertification Credits

    Attendees are welcome to register for one, two or all three days of the short course. Full course registration is $275, which includes resource materials, transportation for tours, lunches, breaks and barbecue.
