If your company or one you know has made major strides in creating or improving a great green space, Project EverGreen wants to know. The organization is still accepting submissions for its second annual Because Green Matters Award which will recognize excellence in promoting the beneficial effects of green spaces. Nominations must be submitted by March 1, 2006. The award will be presented on Earth Day, April 22.
Last year, Project EverGreen honored the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio with its first Because Green Matters award, recognizing abundant landscape enhancements that helped turn the commuter campus into an urban oasis. The University added 30 acres of open green spaces as part of a $300 million building and renovation plan last year. An extensive planting of 30,000 trees helped define campus connections, while open green spaces and planting beds provided the backdrop for students and faculty.

“The University of Akron embodies exactly what we promote through Project EverGreen,” says Den Gardner, executive director. “It is creating an environment at the campus that encourages a sense of identity for the students and helps them see how green spaces enhance their outlook and well-being.”
The Because Green Matters Award is open to anyone. Interested parties may nominate themselves, their companies or their organizations. Applications will be judged and a winner selected by a group of independent, expert judgets. Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2006. The winner will be notified in March 2006.
