MILWAUKEE – Record-setting temperatures across much of the eastern United States over the past few days are getting people outdoors and itching to start planting for summer. However, that itch needs to be suppressed as there could still be some winter and frost left yet this year.
According to Hawks Nursery in Wauwatosa, Wisc., if you’re looking at putting anything in the ground outside, you’re best bet is to wait. "We still recommend (you) wait until May to plant annuals. A lot of trees and shrubs can be planted in April, but if it’s going to be planted outside, wait a little bit. It’s still too early," warned Joe Kresl of Hawks Nursery.
In fact, Hawks just received its first shipment of trees for the season. And the majority of their selection will show up at the end of the month, much closer to planting time.
However, according to Kresl, now is the perfect time to start seeds inside. But as for moving them outdoors, he explains that it is just too early.
