The National Automobile Dealers has issued a warning for consumers to be on alert for flood-damaged used vehicles, including commercial trucks, coming to the marketplace from hurricane devastated regions.
While there is no definitive way to detect a flood damaged commercial truck, the NAD has provided 10 inspection tips:
- Check the vehicle’s title history, it may state whether it has sustained flood damage.
- Examine the interior and the engine compartment for evidence of water and grit, both indicators of possible submersion.
- Check for recently shampooed carpet
- Look under the floorboard carpet for water residue or stain marks
- Inspect for rusting or fading on the inside of the vehicle and under interior carpeting, interior upholstery and door panels
- Check under the dashboard for dried mud and residue. Note any musty odor in the upholstery or carpet.
- Check for rust on screws in the console or other areas where water would normally not reach.
- Look for mud or grit in alternator crevices, behind wiring harnesses and around the starter motor, power steering pumps and relays.
- Complete a detailed inspection of the electrical wiring system looking for rust and suspicious corrosion.
- Inspect the undercarriage of other components for evidence of rust or flaking metal not associated with the vehicle’s actual age.
