Mark Colp, one of five wood carvers on Echo's Chain Saw Carving Team, works on his winning sculpture of a grizzly bear.

Art and power tools came together recently as five of the top wood carvers in the country competed against each other and against the clock to carve objects out of wood using only a chain saw.

Echo, a manufacturer of hand-held power equipment, hosted the first public appearance of the Echo Carving Team at its corporate headquarters in Lake Zurich, Ill. Featuring five of the top competitive wood carvers from across the U.S., the Echo Carving Team consists of Mike Bihlmaier, Marengo, Ill.; Mark Colp, Lakeport, Calif.; R.D. Coonrod, Qunicy, Ill.; Jason Emmons, St. Croix, Ind.; and Bob King, Edgewood, Wash.

Jim Krischke, mayor of Lake Zurich, judged the carvings and selected Mark Colp’s growling grizzly bear that resembled the local high school mascot as the winner. Colp’s sculpture was donated at the city’s auction for Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. The remaining four sculptures were raffled to Echo employees as part of the company’s contribution to Relay for Life.
