Excel Industries Suffers Fire Damage

Manufacturing should only experience minor delays, though electrical systems may be off-line for weeks.

Fla

Excel Industries, manufacturer of Hustler Turf Equipment, reports that the company’s Plant 1 production facility in Hesston, Kan., suffered a significant fire at 8:15 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, there was considerable damage to the main power distribution system, which caused a loss of electricity to the main manufacturing facility, computer systems and administrative offices.

Plants 2, 3 and 4 are undamaged other than computer and telephone service.

In a press release, the company noted that at this time it is unclear how long it will take to restore electrical service to the facility. Estimates are that phone and computer service will be restored within a couple of days, though it may be as long as two to three weeks before the facility has full electrical service.

Because Excel Industries was already preparing to take its traditional Christmas break, the company says the fire should not cause more than a minor delay in production of Hustler lawn mowers. In the meantime, the company’s distributors have parts and whole goods in stock and can meet any immediate customer needs.

Lawn & Landscape will work to contact representatives of Excel Industries and Hustler Turf Equipment as their electrical systems come back online, and will post updates to this news story as they become available.
