The location of the fuel line in the mower is such that a hole could develop, which in turn could lead to a fuel leak. Exmark officials feared that leak could spark a fire and alerted the commission to the possible hazard.
So far, no one has been injured as a result of the defect, said Rod Benson, engineering services manager for the company.
And it's a problem that can be fixed easily, he said. Dealers will replace the fuel line for those who bring a mower in.
"We've always tried to be very proactive," Benson said. He did not know what the total cost of replacing the fuel lines would be.
Dan Fink owns Small Engines Specialists in Lincoln, which carries Exmark mowers.
He said his business had sold just one of the mowers being recalled, which are primarily for commercial use. The fuel line on that one has already been replaced, he said.
Other than that, he said, he didn't know of any other problems with the machines.
"This Exmark is a good unit," Fink said.
The mowers being recalled are model LZ28KC604 with a serial range of 440000 to 500539, and model LZ28KC724, with a serial range of 440000 to 500612. All products are equipped with a foldable roll-over protection bar. The model and serial number can be found on the frame below the seat. The models were sold between July 2003 and September 2004.
