Fewer Customer Phone Calls? Great!

Marketing consultant Jeffrey Scott offers PLANET members unique tips at PLANET's Green Industry Conference during GIE+EXPO.

Most business owners would be nervous if their office phones suddenly stopped ringing.

Not Jeffrey Scott.

As an author, marketing consultant and president of Landscape Success Systems, Scott actually hopes few people call his business.

But wouldn’t this mean he isn’t attracting enough customers?

Not necessarily, as Scott explained at last Wednesday’s PLANET Green Industry Conference marketing workshop in Louisville, Ky. Delivering an informative and motivational speech, Scott said that lawn care and landscape companies should want to minimize incoming phone calls from customers by being more proactive with communication.

“Call the customers, check in regularly and keep them informed,” Scott said.

However, initiating communication wasn’t Scott’s only advice for business owners looking to attract clients. Before any landscape or lawn care company can shape a successful marketing or advertising plan, Scott said it must first build a profile of itself.

To do this, Scott suggested company leaders should first answer the following questions:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What do you do to meet their needs?
  • What is your unique sales advantage?
  • What are your supporting advantages?
  • At what price point do you want to sell?
  • How does your image support that?
  • What is your company promise?

Once owners have a clear understanding of what their company is about, Scott said they can then choose from the following nine proven ways to grow their business:

  • Referrals from the trade
  • Phone book and advertisement
  • Direct mail
  • Relationship marketing
  • Phone strategy
  • Driver strategy
  • Web site
  • Events
  • Customer referral marketing
