George Toma Honored at PBI/Gordon Luncheon

PBI/Gordon spokesman, author and "sports turf legend" recognized for 30 year relationship with firm.

George P. Toma, the nationally recognized Kansas City groundskeeper, was guest of honor at a recent luncheon held by PBI/Gordon Corporation, Kansas City, celebrating the firm’s long relationship with the sports turf legend.

Fla
George Toma and Everett Mealman, PBI/Gordon board chairman, exchange memories and mementos of a 30-year friendship and business relationship.

Everett Mealman, PBI/Gordon Chairman of the Board, presented Mr. Toma with a plaque commemorating their 30-year relationship.  This gesture was reciprocated by Toma presenting a copy of his biography, “Nitty Gritty Dirt Man,” to Mr. Mealman.  Published by Sports Publishing, LLC, and currently in its hardcover release, the book recounts many interesting field preparation events and challenges in Toma’s career, which has included all NFL Super Bowls ever played.

George has been a spokesman for PBI/Gordon’s professional turf and ornamental products for over two decades.

Reunited with George at the luncheon was Skip Skaptason, who retired ten years ago as PBI/Gordon Vice President of Research and Development.  He was responsible for initiating the contact between Gordons and groundskeeper while Toma was at Kansas City’s old municipal stadium, which hosted both the old Kansas City A’s and the then new Kansas City Chiefs.

In a speech to the employee-owners of PBI/Gordon, Toma said of their relationship: “I shall cherish our friendship for as long as I live and wish my best to the very best--and then some.”
