Giant Rolling Billboard to Fight a Tiny Pest

"Don't Move Firewood" message takes on new urgency after Emerald ash borer is found in three Chicagoland towns.

The United States Department of Agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection has launched a campaign designed to increase public awareness regarding the risk associated moving firewood and the artificial spread of the Emerald ash borer (EAB). This month, EAB was discovered in Kane and Cook counties in Illinois.

The outdoor campaign is a regional initiative, supporting the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. Approximately 500 stationary bulletins have been posted along major highways and roads, in addition to the use of a mobile bulletin during public events/festivities to make the public aware of the potential hazard of spreading the emerald ash borer.

The rolling billboard will hit Chicago from July 28 through Aug. 1, hitting spots including Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Cubs games and various festivals.

EAB is an invasive species of wood-boring beetles, native to China and eastern Asia that targets ash trees in North America.  It was first detected in July of 2002 in southeastern Michigan and has since been found in Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, Virginia and most recently in Illinois last month. More than 21,636 square miles are currently quarantined due to the presence of the beetle.
