Help on the Hill

There’s still time to take a day or two off and represent your industry at PLANET’s Day on the Hill and Renewal & Remembrance event.

Pesticide legislation pressures. Growing water conservation worries. Impending H-2B legislation deadlines.

Do you feel overwhelmed by one or more of these imperative green industry issues? Then step away from your business and attend the Professional Landcare Network’s Day on the Hill and Renewal & Remembrance event July 23 through July 25.

The event kicks off the night of July 23 with a welcome reception to reconnect with industry peers or meet new acquaintances in order for contractors to network and discuss solutions for facing these potential business-limiting concerns.

The next morning (July 24), hundreds of lawn care and landscape companies and their teams will honor American heroes by beautifying the grounds at Arlington National and Historic Congressional cemeteries. This year, the mission is to lime more than 270 acres of turf, renovate landscape areas around the visitor’s center and provide tree protection services at Arlington Cemetery. Across town at Historic Old Congressional Cemetery, volunteers will supply weed control services in addition to landscaping and arborcare. Arlington is a national shrine and the final resting place for approximately 300,000 Americans. Five thousand funerals are conducted there annually and the cemetery receives about 5 million visitors and tourists yearly.

More than 20 green industry teams are already formed and have their work assignments for Renewal & Remembrance. Assigned with patriotic names, such as “Democracy,” “Independence,” “Liberty” and “Justice,” the groups have team leaders ready to kick off the formal program and volunteer work at 7:45 a.m.

Then on Monday afternoon Howard Fineman, Newsweek’s chief political correspondent, senior editor and deputy Washington Bureau chief, as well as news analyst for NBC and its cable networks – MSNBC and CNBC, will initiate discussion and updates on key industry issues, such as H-2B, Association Health Care and pesticide regulation and legislation. U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez will also be one of the speakers. This will be followed by a reception and dinner.

Last year's team

On Tuesday (July 25), green industry members will take the information they’ve gathered and the industry stance on each issue and conduct legislative appointments with various state representatives and senators, such a Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.). Approximately 45 appointments are already set up.
