How Customers Choose A Lawn Care Service

In increasing numbers homeowners are turning their lawns over to a professional for care and maintenance.

MARIETTA, Ga. – In increasing numbers homeowners are turning their lawns over to a professional for care and maintenance. A 1999 Gallup poll showed that more than 21 million U.S. households spent a record $16.8 billion on professional green industry services that year. Lawn and landscape maintenance was the number one green industry service hired by homeowners.

"More and more people realize the value of a healthy turf and often hire a professional to take care of their lawn," said Tom Delaney, executive vice president of the Professional Lawn Care Association of America. "Not only are homeowners able to reap the environmental benefits of having a well-maintained lawn, they are also able to enjoy more leisure time with family and friends when they hire a lawn care service. And, a well-maintained property can add anywhere from 5 to 15 percent to a home’s value."

In addition to fertilizing, a professional can tackle the more difficult aspects of lawn care, such as identifying and controlling lawn pest problems like weeds, insects and diseases, using the proper equipment and choosing the right product for your lawn.

Hiring the right lawn service takes a little effort, but the rewards of a thick, healthy lawn are substantial. PLCAA offers the following tips to help homeowners select a professional lawn care service:

  1. Ask the company for a detailed listing of services and costs.
  2. Request a written estimate, length of service and renewal policy.
  3. Check references and call your local better business bureau.
  4. Make sure the company meets any state licensing requirements.
  5. Ask if the company is a member of a professional association.

Contractors can use the above tips as a basis to improve customer service and acquire more contracts. Lawn care service providers become customers’ partners in maintaining a thick and healthy lawn. In addition to providing specific services, professionals should advise customers on proper mowing and irrigation of their lawns. Any concerns or questions customers have will be directed to their lawn care service provider.
