Irrigation Association Outlines Second Quarter Activities

Naming a new executive director and preparing for the 27th International Irrigation Show top the list.

This is what the Irrigation Association has been up to during the second quarter:

  • Deborah M. Hamlin selected as new Irrigation Association executive director to replace retiring Executive Director Tom Kimmell
  • JULY IS SMART IRRIGATION MONTH

      The Irrigation Association has named July Smart Irrigation Month to promote efficient watering practices, technologically advanced irrigation products, and water conservation. Smart Irrigation Month is an industry-wide opportunity to promote water-saving products, practices and services. 

       With growing demands straining water resources everywhere, there is a push to promote water-saving products, adopt “best practices” and educate customers about how to do more with less.

  • Members visit lawmakers, federal staff in Washington to discuss a potential water caucus, EQIP funding and Smart Irrigation Month
  • Preparations progress for 27th International Irrigation Show in San Antonio: industry tours planned; hotel information, expo floor plan go online; Attendee Information & Registration brochure published
  • Technical Conference Committee schedules more than 60 technical presentations for International Irrigation Show
  • IA trade-out program gets commitments from record 54 publications to run show, education ads
  • Education Manager Caitlin Chipperfield becomes an IA Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor
  • Overall membership grows by 18 percent from 2005 with contractor memberships showing the biggest gain at 28 percent n Smart Irrigation Month Web site and ads are developed; participation is widespread among industry, trade press, water purveyors, affiliates and local, federal, state and international programs
  • Environmental Protection Agency unveils WaterSense program and water efficiency label; irrigation certification programs and irrigation products will be first in line for the label
  • IA has strong representation at the Environmental Protection Agency public meeting on WaterSense criteria to recognize certification programs
  • Executive director joins committee to choose a board to lead the Alliance for Water Efficiency; IA comments on program proposal Quarterly Member Update The Irrigation Association
  • Members provided feedback for developers of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's online Irrigation Energy Estimator for evaluating energy savings for irrigation upgrades and operational changes
  • IA participates in introductory conference call with new Secretary of Interior Dirk Kempthorne n State and Affiliate Relations engaged in legislation, regulatory activity in 16 states
  • IA conducts presentation on challenges of working in multiple jurisdictions for the American Backflow Prevention Association annual show; discusses irrigation efficiency with National American Horticultural Supply Association water task force
  • IA discusses ramifications of California's Water Conservation in Landscaping Act with California Landscape Contractors Association, California Green Industry Council n 2006-2007 Membership Directory and Buyers' Guide is published
  • Irrigation Association Education Foundation awards trips to the 27th International Irrigation Show to four student winners of irrigation events at the Professional Landcare Network Student Career Days n IAEF hosts 22 instructors at the Fourth Annual Faculty Academy in San Marcos, Calif., where instructors reviewed draft of Pipe Sizing teaching module
  • IAEF develops video promoting Careers in Irrigation for high school and college students Michael Noftle, CID, CAIS, of Clearwater Supply Inc., Royal City, Wash., joins Certification Board n "Bridging the Headgate" government/association consortium meets at the National Association of Conservation Districts conference in Boise, Idaho; IA develops logo
  • History Committee re-formed to develop a plan to display irrigation artifacts collected by the late Bob Morgan
  • Members of Center Pivot Common Interest Group launch a campaign to promote the benefits of pivot irrigation to Nebraska n Aerator and Fountain Common Interest Group becomes independent Aerator and Fountain Manufacturers Association
  • Smart Water Application Technologies program accepts comments on the first draft of phase two of soil moisture sensor tests, Outdoor Operational Test on Turf Grass; develops procedures for selecting next product categories for technology promotion
  • SWAT enters marketing agreements with City of Bend, Ore., and Municipal Water District of Orange County, Calif.
  • SWAT tests educational materials developed for homeowners, unveils logo
  • IA provides financial support for legislative agenda of Irrigation Association of New England as well as Web site, membership development plan for Alberta Chapter
  • Phoenix Irrigation Supply of Elk Grove, Ill., joins the Irrigation Association as a Silver member
