July Issue Extra: Blower Maintenance Basics

Contractors who use power blowers on a regular basis can stretch the lifespan of their equipment by following some basic maintenance tips.

On a per-use basis:

·        Clean the exterior surfaces

·        Check the throttle lock and throttle trigger

·        Clean the filter or replace it, if necessary

·        Check all nuts and screws are properly tightened

·        Make sure all housings are free of cracks

·        Make sure the collection bag is intact and that the zipper works

On a weekly basis:

·        Check the condition of the starter device, the starter cord and tensioning spring

·        Check that none of the anti-vibration mountings are damaged

·        Check the condition of the air intake at the starter device and remove debris if clogged

·        Clean the outside of the spark plug. Replace if necessary

·        Clean the fan blades and flywheel

·        Clean or replace the muffler’s spark arrest screen, except on mufflers with a catalytic converter

·        Clean the carburetor space

·        Clean the air filter

On a monthly basis:

·        Flush the fuel tank with clean gasoline, which should be done in an environmentally correct manner

·        Clean the outside of the carburetor and the space around it

·        Clean the fan blades on the flywheel and the space around it

·        Check the fuel filter and the fuel line and replace if necessary

·        Check all the cables and connections

·        Change the spark plug

·        Check the muffler’s spark arrest screen if it has a catalytic converter – Husqvarna
