Kellogg Names Rose for Chairman & Matriarch

Kellogg Garden Products honors its chariman of the board with a new rose named in her honor.

CARSON, Calif. –What do Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Bush and Janice Kellogg have in common?

They all have a rose named after them.

As part of its 80th anniversary celebration next year, Kellogg Garden Products is honoring Janice Kellogg, the company’s chairman of the board, with a rose bearing her name. Now, when Janice takes the time to smell the roses, she can include her own rose, too.

Next year, gardens will be able to include Janice Kellogg™, which reflects the sense of tradition and roots of its namesake, the matriarch of the Kellogg family. Kellogg’s commemorative rose is a beautiful and traditional burgundy red Grandiflora that will be made available for retailers to order through Star Roses in Spring 2005, and will be sold in stores beginning in late 2005 or early 2006. The rose’s distinctive qualities include its cuplike, old-fashioned shape and romantic-styled blooms, striking dark red color resembling vintage wine, and a classical mild rose fragrance.

Experience, commitment and caring are the qualities Janice Kellogg has brought to the gardening and nursery industries through the years, said Hap Kellogg, Janice’s son and CEO of Kellogg Garden Products based in Carson, Calif.

“She has always been there for us through thick and thin,” Hap said. “This rose is the least we can do to honor her and her contributions. Her graceful presence, warmth and support has meant so much to our family not to mention our business and the industry overall. Our employees, some who have been here more than 40 years, have a great deal of respect and affection for her.”

Kathy Kellogg Johnson, Janice’s daughter and corporate secretary at Kellogg Garden Products, added, “Flowers have always meant so much to my mother. From when I was a little girl, she was forever pointing out beautiful wildflowers or interesting landscapes. This seemed like an appropriate way for us to show her how much she has meant to our family, and to all of our employees who she has always treated like members of our own family through the years.”

Through Janice’s guidance as chairman of the board, Kellogg Garden Products has continued its remarkable success into the third generation. In 1982, Janice joined Kellogg as vice president. The experience proved valuable preparation for her later running the company following the sudden death of her husband H. Clay “Hi” Kellogg, Jr. in 1987. Janice stepped in and guided Kellogg for the next four years while her son, Hap Kellogg, prepared to take over as company president and CEO.

Janice’s education in the family business actually began much earlier when she left her teaching career in 1960 to marry Hi, son of the founder of Kellogg Garden Products. Janice earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from San Diego and taught in the San Diego and Santa Cruz school districts for a number of years.

Janice attends numerous garden industry trade shows, state conventions and participates in industry seminars, and is active in non-profit volunteer work. She has also served on the board of the directors of the California Fertilizer Association, and is a member of the California Landscape Contractors Association and the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers.
