FISHERS, Ind. -- Call is a stroke of luck or call it a miracle. The Lawrence Township Fire Department says either term applies. Its firefighters raced to perform a rescue, but this time, someone else handled the heroics.

By early evening Monday, the Fishers pond was back to normal and barely showing a ripple. There was nothing to give away the panic there around 4:00 pm.

Witness Tom Tokarek said he saw someone drowning or struggling in the water. So did Alejandro Rodriguez, Bernardo Rodriguez, and Simon Hernandez, who were working on a landscape project on the other side of the pond.

A toddler had just fallen into the pond. "She tried to grab the child.  The child literally slipped out of her sight under water,” said Captain James King, Lawrence Township Fire Department.

The landscape contractors swam across the pond to search for the child. "They pulled a boat from this side and pulled the boat in the water and got him in the boat and got him ashore, safely," said Tokarek.

The firefighters and other emergency personnel came after Tokarek called 911. "When they arrived on the scene, the child was luckily out of the water,” said King. The child’s rescuers performed CPR and the toddler was taken to the hospital.

The landscape contractors earned praise for their quick response. "You could say they risked their life to save another one and absolutely, they did save this life," said King.

While the rescuers could not say too much in English, their actions say enough. That’s courage in any language.

Captain King says the child was treated and released at the hospital.
